NUS - Flying High With Hopes And Aspiration
NUS GLOBAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP
Now: Second-year undergrad pursuing Mechanical Engineering at NUS
From: Singapore Polytechnic
Have no doubt on NUS Scholar Andrew Ong who goes all out to live his engineering dreams.
NUS - Is it just any other school? I hardly think so. A number of things come to mind when I hear this name: prestige, honour and a cultured institution that is a cut above the rest.
Having graduated from Singapore Polytechnic in 2008 with a Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering, I decided that I wanted to further my studies in Mechanical Engineering at NUS. To date, NUS has not only provided me with an all-rounded, broad based education, it has also given me the option to specialise in one of ten engineering fields during my final year. No doubt, Aeronautical Engineering would be my first choice.
Springing From Poly To NUS
Having done well at the polytechnic, my parents and polytechnic lecturers encouraged me to apply for a NUS scholarship. Not only was the online application process simple to follow, the administrative staff was also extremely helpful in answering my queries. I was fortunate to be short-listed for an interview with the scholarship board and unlike any other interviews that I had gone through, the session with NUS was warm and friendly. I could feel the genuine interest from the interviewers. It was indeed an anxious wait for the outcome but I was elated when I found out that I was awarded with the NUS Global Merit Scholarship (GMS).
The GMS provides me with a sponsored education at NUS with the opportunity to stay on campus as well as to participate in an overseas student exchange programme. With such benefits, the experience in NUS has been engaging and I am seriously looking forward to do a semester overseas next year, hopefully in USA.
A trait unique of NUS is that they put in much effort to forge close ties among scholars. The NUS Scholars Community (NSC) was formed in 2009 with the intention of allowing scholars from the various faculties to share their experiences as well as to learn from one another. In addition, the community had in mind the need to contribute to society and I am looking forward to joining an overseas community project with my peers.
An Active Academic Journey
Besides its academic excellence, NUS offers a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. Over the span of three months, I have been to two separate weekend overseas trips with the NUS Dive Club and NUS Golf Club where I got to meet and socialise with students from other faculties. I am also actively involved with the NUS Swimming Team, which won the overall championship title in the recent 2010/2011 Institute-Varsity- Polytechnic Games. With such an exciting line-up of activities that the university has to offer, no one can fault NUS for being ‘all work and no play’.
Since studying here, NUS has become my new ‘home away from home’ and it has been a wonderful experience thus far. Receiving this scholarship has certainly been a milestone in my life, especially since I was only an average student before going to the polytechnic. Having said this, there are actually many scholarships offered by numerous organisations and for those about to make a decision, why not choose one that is not only bond-free, but comes from Singapore’s most reputable educational institution? The NUS experience has definitely made a difference to me and I am confident that it would also make a positive impact on you.
